Marko Melkon

Marko Melkon

"Melkon Alemsherian was born in Izmir (Turkey) in 1895, to Armenian parents ... His mother wanted him to take guitar lessons as a youngster but the closest thing they could find was an oud. So, quite by accident, this became his intrument. At seventeen he was to fulfill his obligation in the Turkish army. His father could not afford to buy him out, so he fled to Athens (Greece) where he played in the taverns and coffee houses ... In 1921, he left for U.S., traveling with his musician friend and colleague, Achilles Poulos ... Thus began his career as a cabaret performer. He took the stage name Marko Melkon." (written by Rose Hagopian, from CD's program notes)

Marko Melkon is an very interesting musician. We had a hard time deciding under which category he should be listed. He was born in Turkey, so he could be listed under "Turkey." He had Armenian parents, so he could be listed under "Armenia." He lived a short period in Greece, and stayed in U.S. for the rest of his life, so we felt like, he should be listed under "Other."

"Marko Melkon" was released by Traditional Crossroads in 1996. Traditional Crossroads archival series of world music recordings from 1920 to 1950 "is the only series to be remastered from the original metal parts" in U.S. (from Traditional Crossroads catalog). They have a web-site where you can buy this CD and see their catalog. You can also find this CD in some of the on-line distributors, we have links to these distributors on our "Oud CDs" page.
