Simon Shaheen

Turath

This CD features Simon Shaheen (ud), Hasan Ishkut (qanun), Faruk Tekbilek (ney), and Samir Khalil (riq and tar). We will briefly review Simon Shaheen.

"Simon Shaheen is a virtuoso on the ud and the violin and a performer and composer of both traditional Arab and Western classical music. Born in 1955 in the village of Tarshiba in the northern Galilee, he began his extensive musical training in early childhood with his father, Hikmat Shaheen, a well-known performer, composer, and music educator. Simon Shaheen entered the Reuben Academy, where he studied Western Music and violin, at the age of seven, and graduated from the Jerusalem Music Academy in 1978 with degrees in music and Arabic literature. He taught Arab music and music theory at the Academy until 1980 when he moved to New York to continue his studies at Columbia University and the Manhattan School of Music ... Turath is the most recent project inspired by Shaheen's ongoing interest in researching, performing, and recording the traditional music of the Middle East." (written by Ali Jihad Racy, from the CD's program notes)
