Abdel Karim el Kably

Sudan

This LP features Abdel Karim el Kably (sometimes spelled as Kabli) on oud and shetem (small drum). Roxane Connick (who recorded the LP and wrote the explanatory notes) also made an interview with the artist which appears as a track.

"...In childhood Kably showed his absorption in music and poetry to the exclusion of almost all case. He sought out folk musicians, imitated their songs and their methods of tuning and playing their instruments, particularly the ud which he played well before his teens, and he learned hundreds of old songs by heart after hearing them only a few times. During his studies at the University of Khartoum nothing could prevent him from continuous study of Sudanese folkmusic and from delving deeply into the old Arabic poetic traditions. Whenever a fine poem or a strophe or even one line of lovely imagery caught his fancy, he would set this to melodies which he composed to suit the rhythm and sendse of the words. Over the years Kably became an accomplished composer of songs in the Sudanese tribal tradition and in the modern Sudanese idiom, a poet who could improvise lines of verse with many of the intricate rhyming, the lexical tricks, and the vivid imagery of the masters of old Arabic poetry..." (information from LP's program notes)

"Sudan" was recorded in 1963, 1966, and 1967. It was released by Afrotone in 1967. I have sent a letter to the address on the LP cover, but it came back to me. I assume that Afrotone either does not exist anymore or they changed their address. If you have an information about them, please send it to us via our "Feedback" page. Since this is a rare LP, we will try to put some sound files as soon as possible. If you live in the U.S., you might want to try public or university libraries to find a copy of this LP.
