Mustafa al Sunni

Songs of the Sudan

Mustafa al Sunni (voice, oud) is accompanied by Abd al Hafiz Karar on triple-headed bongo drums.

"Mustafa al Sunni was born in 1964 in Rafa'a, a town on the Blue Nile south of Khartoum. He took up music seriously in the late 1970s, teaching himself to play the 'ud and listening to older players, both amateur and professional. He cites Ab dal Aziz Da'ud, a well-known singer, as having been his major musical influence. He is admired for the sweetness of his voice and for the proficiency of his playing and is known especially for his broad repertoire which draws upon all the aforementioned categories as inspiration for his own compositions. He works closely with a number of poets, among them his cousin, the highly respected Bashir al Qamar." (information from CD's program notes)
