"Kemani Tatyos Ekserciyan, known as Kemani Tatyos Efendi, holds a unique position in the history of Ottoman classical music. He was among the last of the classicists to compose in the style of the lale devri or the Tulip Age (1718-30) when music flourished most in the Ottoman Empire... Kemani Tatyos combined in his compositions a mastery of Ottoman classical forms, theorized and refined over centuries, with a Beethoven-like lyricism unique in its seamlessness and its allusion to western forms.
Kudsi Erguner descends from a long line of ney players connected with the Sufi tradition. Born in Istanbul in 1952, he is the son of Ulvi Erguner, the renowned ney master and former music director of Radio Istanbul who was instrumental in preserving Ottoman art music under the new Republic, reviving significant compositions dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Kudsi learned to play the ney from his father, and absorbed Mevlevi Sufi traditions by performing with him in Dervish ceremonies. He worked at Radio Istanbul, then in 1975 moved to Paris, where he became an architect and musicologist. In 1988 he created the Fasl Ensemble bringing together master musicians devoted to reproducing authentic Ottoman performance practice." (written by Harold G. Hagopian, from CD's program notes)
