"Born is Istanbul (Turkey) in 1964, Munir Nurettin Beken was surrounded by Turkish classical music from an early age. He enrolled in the State Conservatory of Istanbul at age 11 and specialized in ud under Mutlu Torun, but also studied Western classical music and composition. He graduated with honors, and immediately became an instructor at the conservatory while completing his Master's degree ... In 1989, he was awarded a fellowship to study ethnomusuciology at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, where he became the Executive Director of the Center for Turkish Music."
